Another week of awesome maths learning has passed. 


We have mastered ordering fractions with like denominators and this is Nikita demonstrating her skills:

We have also mastered finding fractions of a set using multiplication and division. Matt has demonstrated this in the following clip:

We started to investigate how to multiply by 10s, 100s and 1000s.  This will help us with our multiplication and division strategizing.  


We need to keep focusing on learning our basic multiplication and division facts because it really helps us with our strategy work.

This week for Number Knowledge we have been continuing to focus on converting improper fractions to proper fractions and visa versa.  We used the coloured fraction strips to be able to visually see the patterns.  

 

Understanding improper fractions will help us to be able to order fractions with "like" denominators.  

Multiplication and division has continued to be our strategy focus.  We have discovered that we can use your 2 times tables to work out our 4 times tables and this strategy is  called "Doubles".  We have also been using our 5s to work out our 6s and our 10s to work out our 9s, e.g.

5 lots of (x) 6 = 30 so  6 lots of 6 (x) must be 36.

 

10 lots of (x) 4 = 40 so 9 lots of (x) must be 36

          

We have been given Alien Basic Facts sheets for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.  We will not be testing these, but we know how important it is to have instant recall of our basic facts because we use them continually to do our strategy work.

Next week we will be moving onto more complex multiplication and division strategies such as using Place Value and Compensation.  Watch this space for some cool video footage of our thinking.....
